Item Roles and functions of school boards in improving academic performance: the case of selected community secondary schools in Chamwino district, Tanzania(The University of Dodoma, 2015) Mlugu, Peter NasonThis study aimed at identifying roles and functions of the school boards in improving academic performance in community secondary schools in Tanzania, specific in Chamwino District. The study employed a cross-section survey method, which was dominated by qualitative research approach and a bit of quantitative research approach. It was conducted in four selected community secondary schools and it was guided by Path-Goal theory of effectiveness. Employed data collection methods included interviews, questionnaires, and documentary reviews. Collected data were coded and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 11.5 programme. The study revealed that school boards were performing the following roles and functions so as to improve academic performance: approval of school Action Plans, identify Academic need, dealing with students discipline, purchase of teaching and learning materials, facilitation of development of school infrastructure, and motivation to staff members. It was also revealed that school boards faced some challenges when performing their duties that included lack of funds, poor cooperation and inadequate meetings due to lack of funds. The study conclude that school boards should emphasizes on community involvement in academic matters, also school boards should devote more time in academic issues in fulfillment of their roles and functions.
