dc.description.abstract | Introduction. The Renal vascular variation and the incidental renal pathological findings are known for causing surgical complications post renal surgeries and presenting a wide range of variation in the different societies in the world as studied by previous cadaveric or postmortem and imaging studies. However, the patterns and prevalence of renal vascular variation and incidental renal pathological findings are not well known in the Tanzanian population. Hence, this study is aimed to determine the patterns and prevalence of renal vascular variation and incidental renal pathological findings among the patients underwent Abdominal computed tomography angiography at Benjamin Mkapa hospital; so to know local extend and to help safe surgery. Objectives This study aimed to describe the types and prevalence of renal vascular variation and incidental renal pathological findings on abdominal computed tomography angiography at Benjamin Mkapa hospital. Methodology This was a hospital based cross-sectional study conducted through a retrospective review of abdominal computed tomography angiography of the patients from August 2021 to June 2022. To evaluate for renal vascular variation such as Early branching, Hilar accessory arteries, Polar arteries (superior and inferior), multiple renal arteries, level of origin of renal artery, length of renal artery, multiple renal veins, retro aortic renal vein, circumaortic renal vein, level of origin renal vein, length of renal vein and incidental renal pathological findings such as renal malignant masses, benign renal masses and non-masses renal findings. Two radiologists were reviewed the scans conclusion was reached and no disagreement was happened. Descriptive statistical analysis was done by using SPSS version 26.0 and presented by using tables. Results We studied 103 abdominal CTA of the patients (206 kidneys), 59 CTA (57.28%) for males and 44 CTA (42.72%) for females. Age range is less than 100 years, mean (44.72±20.86) .Renal vascular variation 25 CTAs (24.2%) where renal artery and vein variations were 23 CTA (22.3%) and 2 CTA (1.9%) respectively. The early branching was predominant 7.8%; hilar accessory artery (6.8%); superior polar artery (4.8%) ; inferior polar artery(2.9); left side was predominant with 12.6%;double RAs (9.8%); triple (2.9%);level of origin L2 (48.5%); retro aortic renal vein (1%); circumaortic renal vein (1%) ; the longest lengths were 59mm and 39.7mm of left renal vein and right renal artery respectively. Incidental renal pathologies was 50 CTA (48.7%); benign masses (18.4%); renal cyst type I 13.6%; non-masses (48.6%); hydronephrosis 8.6% and malignant are rare 2.9% (biopsy confirmed). Conclusion Both renal vascular variation and incidental renal pathological findings are common among our study population with the prevalence of 24.2% and 48.7% respectively. Among above renal artery variation and renal cyst Bosniak type I is predominant with prevalence of 22.3% and 13.6% respectively. Hence, detailed preoperative evaluation provides a chance to choose the best surgical modality and to avoid intraand post-operative complications. | en_US |
