They are composed of an inner core which is usually coated with a polyhydroxyl carbohydrate and a loaded drug. The solid nanocrystalline inner core provides the structural stability of the aquasomes while the carbohydrate coat shields the loaded drug against dehydration. These self-assembled particles maintain the conformational integrity of the loaded drugs and hence have been exploited as carriers of drugs including insulin, hemoglobin, oxygen, antigens, and antibodies. This system of drug delivery has also been shown to improve the solubility of poorly soluble drugs.
